Abstract

An analysis is provided of the functioning of the control system of modern weapons based on optoelectronic reconnaissance channels and precision weapon guidance. It has been proven that the defeat of a reconnaissance and precision guidance target of the enemy can be achieved not only through direct physical impact on this target, but also by depriving it of the ability to conduct reconnaissance through observation or precision weapon guidance, i.e., by blocking the observation and weapon guidance channel. Problematic issues have been identified concerning the numerical assessment of non-material damage that may be inflicted on the target. The necessity and feasibility of reducing the time and resources required to implement new smoke (smoke-generating) countermeasures against enemy optoelectronic reconnaissance and precision weapon guidance systems are emphasized. This can be achieved by developing preliminary recommendations for their application, using mathematical and software methods for evaluating the effectiveness of smoke ammunition in blocking reconnaissance and precision guidance channels, followed by verification of the obtained results through test firing. The practical absence of a finalized methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of impact on enemy targets by blinding their reconnaissance and precision guidance systems with smoke ammunition, as well as theoretical methods for developing practical recommendations for blinding fire, highlights the relevance of this work. Proposals are given regarding approaches to evaluating the effectiveness of blinding fire against enemy targets employing optoelectronic reconnaissance and precision guidance systems, including during combined use of conventional (high-explosive fragmentation) and smoke shells (mines). A methodology for assessing the effectiveness of blinding fire is proposed, taking into account real conditions of mission execution, along with an algorithm for developing practical recommendations for the use of smoke ammunition based on an analytical-statistical model.

Keywords: visibility, optoelectronic reconnaissance and precision weapon guidance systems, smoke ammunition, blinding, effectiveness.
